What is Wyze Cam?

WyzeCam delivers fast, clear, live stream footage direct to your smartphone via the Wyze App (iOS and Android), day or night. With motion and sound detection you can receive an alert anytime your WyzeCam detects sound and motion, and view up to 14 days of saved alert videos for free – no monthly fees or subscription required. Plus, you can add a microSD card (sold separately) to enable continuous recording and schedule custom time lapse videos, and use 2-way audio to talk and listen through your WyzeCam. Use the Wyze App to manage and view multiple cameras, share your cameras with other users, view alert videos, and record and share photos and videos directly from the app. With its small size, magnetic base, and flexible 3-axis design, the WyzeCam can go anywhere you need it.

Wyze Cam 1080p HD – Design and Features

At 2.2 by 1.9 by 1.9 inches (HWD), the WyzeCam is the smallest home security camera we’ve seen. Previously, the $60 Tend Secure Lynx Indoor camera (3.0 by 2.0 by 2.0 inches) held that title (it also held the title of most afforable security cam). The WyzeCam is glossy white with a thin gray base that contains a hinge and swivel mechanism that allows you to raise the overall height by a little more than an inch and angle the camera in any direction. The base is magnetic so you can attach it to any metal surface or use the included metal disc and double-back tape to put it just about anywhere.

Under the base is a microSD Card slot you can populate with media of up to 32GB to store recorded video. With a microSD card installed (not included), you can also enable continuous recording where the camera is always recording and will automatically overwrite older video when the card becomes full. Also under the base is a Setup button used during the initial installation.

Wyze Cam 1080p HD – Installation and Performance

Installation was easy. I downloaded the mobile app, created an account, and tapped Add New Device. Following the illustrated instructions, I plugged the camera in and waited around 20 seconds for the yellow LED to begin flashing. I pressed the setup button, heard the camera say Ready To Connect, and continued on to the next screen where I selected my Wi-Fi network and password. Next, I held the camera five inches from my phone, which displayed a QR code, and waited a few seconds for the camera to tell me that the QR code was scanned. After that I gave it a name, updated the firmware, and was done.

The WyzeCam delivers sharp 1080p video with rich colors and no distortion. Black-and-white night vision video is also sharp out to around 25 feet, and well-lit with good contrast. Motion and sound detection worked flawlessly in testing once I tweaked sensitivity settings for both. I found the Low settings were optimal for my house but, your mileage may vary.

Video at 10fps is not quite as fluid as what you get with the Tend Secure Lynx and D-Link Mini HD Wi-Fi Camera DCS-8000LH, both of which deliver video at 30fps, but it’s still relatively smooth and more than adequate for home security purposes. The Time Lapse feature works as advertised, and two-way audio is surprisingly clear considering the camera uses such a small speaker.

Conclusions

With the WyzeCam, you get a 1080p home security camera that’s equipped with many of the bells and whistles that you get with more expensive cameras for a mere 20 bucks. The camera delivered sharp day and night HD video in our tests, and never failed to record a motion or sound event, or send a push alert. Interaction with other smart devices would be a welcome addition, and is being considered by Wyze Labs, but this camera is an incredible deal nonetheless. If you have some extra money to splurge, the Tend Secure Lynx Indoor is also a good deal, especially if you’re interested in facial recognition, but you can get three WyzeCams for the same price.
